recap

I’ve been in Cairo for nearly three weeks. Do I feel different or changed as a result? No, I pretty much feel the same way as when I left…I’ve been hanging out with some people at the school and my Egyptian friends. Thus far I’ve taken 800 odd photos…Can I upload them…no, as the connection to the net is tenuous at best. So my plan right now is to stay in Cairo until October at which point I’ll head over to Lebanon, then Jordan, and then Israel. (Please note that I do not plan to buy my tickets for Beirut/Amman until August as there may be another war with Israel this summer…).

My apartment is very large but dirty…The landlord hasn’t seemingly rented it out since the last tenants who were apparently not good as the police were called over several times… I do have air-conditioning and a washing machine…and a shower…kinda…
Two weekends ago, I went to my Egyptian friend’s house for dinner and in many ways it was really odd. First off she lives in a bad area… think East New York or South Central bad. She lives with her mother, who divorced her dad (rarity) and one of her brothers… in a small apartment (but nice by Egyptian standards). My German friend came with me and as soon as the brother found out her nationality, he was thrilled and proceeded to show off his Hitler collection….yeah…not good. The food was great as was the female company…(I don’t really trust the brother). There was a lot of tradition Egyptian food and I was so stuffed!

This past weekend I went to the desert for two nights of camping and quiet. More on that later as I should be studying for tomorrow’s exam!

So I am not dead yet

Believe it or not I am not dead. I've just been really busy. So I've been to the pyrimds, Coptic cairo, the souq... And basically running around the city.

And the adventure begin

So my flight to Cairo was nearly empty. I had an window seat and the emergancy exit row to myself. It was really nice after running around Geneva. I would love to spend some proper time there...it oddly reminded me of Portland.

Cairo has not changed too much. But more women are wearing head scarves and even more in niqabs. I really would to ask why but that can wait.  My friend Yara did pick me up at the airport with some of her other friends. I should be able to move into my apartment on Sunday.  I am getting acustom to playing frogger.  Yes, crossing the street here is that bad.

On my way to Geneva

Somewhere over the Atlantic

If you had asked me last week if I was actually doing this I would say the chances were not good.  But I am. I still am filled with trepidation but this should be good.  I really needed to get out of NYC. Although my send offs did show me how many friends I have. Who knows when I will be back or I should really say if. I do need to thank all who showed up.  I also really owe Joe, for driving me to the airport and Lexie for housing me.

The sun rises over the atlantic with a burning red glow. I know it is becuase of the ash but it oddly reminds me of what I am running from. Tomorrow will be a new day.

(first travel tip - if there is a meal on your flight get the vegan/Hindu meal as you will get served first and it tends to be rather healthy and not to mention edible....if you are flying out of the US.)
